Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Type: Full-time, permanent

The Position:

The Senior Mechanical Designer will report to the Engineering Manager and be responsible for planning and preparing a full range of documents including problem analysis, design layout and calculation on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity. Must be able to execute assignments requiring independent evaluation and judgment, select, recommend and prepare preliminary designs, produce complete plans, apply formulas, principles and practices, coordinate the design and detailing activities on assigned projects, and other duties as assigned. The Senior Mechanical Designer will work with the Engineering Team directly to execute design tasks related to existing and new products. Also expected to liaise with other members of the design and manufacturing teams in order to collaboratively develop MIT products such as metal forming machines, transfer tooling presses etc., develop engineering models and drawings for complex equipment with minimal supervision, check the drawings of other design personnel for completeness and accuracy, and perform tolerance studies on tools for the proper functioning of equipment. In addition, calculate and specify tolerances in relation to product requirements and manufacturing restrictions, supporting designs with required calculations in Mathcad or Excel. Some international travel may be required.

Job Duties:
  • Liaise with other members of the Design and Manufacturing Teams in order to collaboratively develop M.I.T. ™ products such as metal forming machines, transfer tooling presses, rolling mills, etc.
  • Assist with the development and detailing of final designs specific to the projects working directly with Project Leaders
  • Work with Engineers/Project Leaders to create and update mechanical drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Produce other required documents using Excel and Word
  • Design and draft equipment systems in 2D and 3D
  • Responsible for ensuring the drawings meet established project criteria and applicable standards
  • Attend design team meetings
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Engineering Manager
Job Requirements

The Person:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering preferred, with seven to ten years’ experience in the areas described above. Automotive design experiences an asset. Strong analytical, problem solving, research, written and verbal communication skills required. Master CAD proficiency (Solidworks and CAD a must, AutoCAD an asset). Understanding of metal fabrication and electrical contros. Well organized and self motivated, able and eager to learn quickly and adapt within a fast-paced environment.
Job Requirements:
  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the areas described above
  • Proficient SolidWorks, AutoCAD an asset
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T
  • Well-organized and motivated with good initiative and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and team working skills
