Hiring for an Education Assistant to work closely with STEM leaders of tomorrow by educating them about the STEM career opportunities that are all around them on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The goal of the Educational and Leadership Program is to educate young minds (especially urban youth) about STEM job opportunities and develop future leaders by inspiring our youth and bridging opportunities to pursue STEM careers in Western New York.  This will further help to bring greater diversity and racial equity to the workforce within the medical sector in Buffalo. 
 
The Educational and Leadership Program include:
 
  1. Brain Boot Camps are held each month for 25 high school students (300 annually). The program seeks to educate students on heart attack and stroke (the number one causes of death and long-term disability), while inspiring them to consider careers in health and science in order to give back to the Western New York Community.
 
  1. Quarterly virtual high school career webinars with different panelists. The webinars will provide interested high school students with information on different career opportunities in health care. Each webinar will feature three or four panelists.
 
  1. High School 'Next Gen' Summer Internships. The company offers two-week summer internships to 15 rising high school Juniors and Seniors. It exposes them to the diverse career opportunities available on the BNMC and allows them to explore a research topic of their interest.  
 
  1. Summer College Internships. This is an eight-week summer internship for four students in the fields of engineering, education, and communications/marketing/public relations to qualified college students (rising Juniors and Seniors and grad students).  This program is highly competitive, and interns are selected based on the current needs and the interns' interests and capabilities.
 
The Education Assistant will build on the success of past educational activities to achieve maximum impact, galvanizing the forward momentum of the Institute. The candidate will be a determined mentor with a high level of emotional intelligence and a creative and enterprising approach to education. He or she will be keenly focused on bringing the right people and tools to the table to facilitate transformative educational programing. 
 
Once you are here you might:
  • Develop new content for the brain boot camps (BBCs)
  • Writing for Marketing
  • Manage BBC requests and schedule space
  • Secure BBC guest speakers
  • Help promote the summer college internship program to college and university placement offices, job boards, and career fairs
  • Screen college intern applications
  • Schedule SparkHires and in-person interviews for intern candidates
  • Help onboard college interns
  • Coordinate intern parking
  • Help mentors write projects for the college interns
  • Mentor the college intern responsible for the high school internship program
  • Assemble notebooks, projects, and educational materials for the college interns
  • Administer college intern post-program survey
  • Help with high school intern recruitment via outreach to schools
  • Create education materials for the high school students
  • Plan speakers for the high school program
  • Assist with programming and coordination for the two-week Scholars program in June
  • Assist with special fundraising events in collaboration with the Meeting Services, VP for Programs, and Development Coordinator

Target salary - $ 40 K

Job Requirements

 
Required Skills / Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 1 year experience working with and mentoring young people.

Preferred Skills / Qualifications:
  •  Experience managing many projects with multidisciplinary teams.
